Why can’t I connect on a Nokia S60 phone?

Connection problems can occur when downloading the application or when trying to register with a registration code.

You may not have data included in your tariff or your phone may not have been set up for accessing the Internet. Please check with your network operator.

Nokia phones include an application called 'Settings Wizard' (usually found in Applications or Applications... Utilities) that can detect the SIM type and set the correct connection settings.

You can check if you have an Internet connection by trying to browse a non-network operator site using your phone web browser. For example, see if you can see http://www.locatorz.co.uk.

Why can’t I connect on BlackBerry?

Your Internet connection may be restricted by your company’s policies. Please contact your company’s BlackBerry administrator.

If the application can't be downloaded via the web browser then it could be a problem with default browser filtering permissions. They must be set to ‘allow’ before downloading the application. To change:

1. Go to Settings > Options > Advanced Options > Applications (on some devices you may go directly to the Options icon)
2. Press the Menu key and select: Edit Default Permissions
3. Expand the Interactions category by highlighting it and then pressing the space bar
4. Scroll down to Browser Filtering and then press the space bar to set it to Allow
5. Press the ESC (Back Key) – “Save Changes” – Yes
6. Press the ESC (Back Key) four times to return to the home icons

You can check if you have an Internet connection by trying to browse a non-network operator site using your phone web browser. For example, see if you can see http://www.locatorz.co.uk.

I get a message saying ‘There is currently no valid location information for this asset’.

If the location isn't being reported by the phone then this can be for one of several reasons...

  • The phone may not be able to get a GPS location. Test GPS by trying another application that uses GPS, for example, Google Maps with GPS. Try moving outside into the open.
  • The phone may not be able to connect to the Internet to send the location. Test the connection by trying another application such as the phone web browser. Can you access http://www.locatorz.co.uk?
  • The Locatorz program may not be running because you have closed it. You can test if Locatorz is running by seeing if it’s on the task list. On Symbian press the Applications key for a while. On Blackberry, select menu...Switch Application. If not running, Start the application and select 'Back' to set it running in background.

Also, remember that, depending on the update period set on the web site, you might have to wait a long time for the next location update. Setting a new update period will only come into effect once the phone has successfully sent a location and been able to contact the server.

Why is the location sometimes inaccurate?

Nokia S60 phones make a ‘best attempt’ guess at location when the GPS signal is poor. This uses a combination of Assisted GPS (‘hints’ for the GPS to speed up a fix) and Network GPS that uses other information such as network operator tower cells. Some S60 users have experienced more accurate results when Assisted GPS is switched off. You can change the phone’s positioning methods by selecting… Applications…Location…Positioning… Positioning Methods.

Why doesn’t my position on the map update when I am on a phone call?

Most devices will not be able to transmit your location information to the server whilst you are on a phone call. Once the
call is ended, data will start to be transmitted again.
